Matthew Kirby ’94 

Briarcrest Christian School is proud to honor Matthew Kirby, Class of 1994, as the 2026 recipient of the Paul Piper Distinguished Alumnus Award. Matthew’s life and career reflect a steadfast commitment to excellence, leadership, and faith.

After graduating from Briarcrest, Matthew attended Union University before earning his law degree from the University of Memphis. Since 2001, he has built a distinguished legal career at Harris Shelton Hanover Walsh, one of Memphis’s largest law firms, where he now serves as a partner and key leader.

Matthew is widely respected in his field and has received numerous professional accolades. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America since 2017 and has been named “Lawyer of the Year” in Memphis three times, most recently in 2026. For more than a decade, he has earned the highest possible ratings from both peers and clients, which reflects not only his legal expertise, but also his integrity and consistency.

His practice focuses on high-stakes litigation, representing hospitals, healthcare providers, schools, and ministries. He has successfully argued cases before both the Tennessee Court of Appeals and the Tennessee Supreme Court.

Matthew’s journey of excellence began at Briarcrest, where he was actively involved in athletics, leadership, and service. He played varsity football for four years, baseball for five years, and basketball for two years, while also representing the school at Boys State and participating in Bridges.

The Kirby family’s connection to Briarcrest runs deep. Matthew’s daughter, Abigail ’23, and his son, Henry ’27, continue the legacy, while his wife, Shannon, has faithfully served on the faculty for the past decade. Including his siblings’ time at Briarcrest, the family’s connection to the school spans more than 70 years.

Above all, Matthew is a man of faith. He serves as an ordained deacon, and a verse that has been especially meaningful to him is John 20:16: “Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’” This simple yet powerful moment reflects the personal nature of Christ’s love, which is a truth that continues to shape Matthew’s life and calling.
