High School Students Learn Hands-On During Career Shadow Day
Briarcrest High School implemented a new hands-on learning program this year that allows our students to go out into the community to explore careers alongside a professional. “Career Shadow Day was a great success,” said High School Librarian Ginny Manguno who coordinated the shadow days. “Our students were allowed to pair up with a professional in their desired field and they learned so much from this experience.”
Students shadowed with various fields such as an Aerospace Engineer, Nurse Anesthetist, Architect, Medical Malpractice Attorney, Child Life Specialist, NICU and a Veterinarian, just to name a few.
Briarcrest Senior Jacob Wade took a trip out to Federal Express, where he got to experience many aspects of Engineering first hand. His shadow experience proved to be very valuable. “Jacob wants to enter into the field of Aerospace Engineering. He had access to many different areas of our corporation that involves Engineering. We had a great visit,” said Kevin Burkhart, Managing Director, Aircraft Acquisitions and Fuel Management. “Jacob asked a lot of good questions, and hopefully we gave him some things to think about as he ponders his college choices and future career,” Burkhart added.
Over the course of the day, Jacob met with three different Managing Directors in FedEx Air Operations, all of whom had engineering degrees, but had taken different career paths at FedEx.
The highlight of his morning was a demo ride in a FedEx aircraft flight simulator.
