With a convincing win over CBHS Tuesday night at home, the 27-3 boys’ basketball team sealed FIRST place in the TSSAA DII AA West Region for the first time since 2013. The Saints have had a remarkable season so far with several accomplishments. They began the season with a record setting 19-0 win streak which is the longest in the history of the school beating the 1983 Wilfong led Saints record of 18-0! As part of that streak, they won the Briarcrest Christmas Classic for the second year in a row as well as the prestigious Mater Dei Holiday Tournament in Bres, Illinois for the 2nd time.
The Saints are led by seniors Cedric Henderson (finalist for Mr. Basketball), Ben Sivils, Justin Batts, and Corban Smith with a strong bench of younger classmen that provide a seamless rotation transition that has troubled many opponents. Senior Ben Sivils has led the team the last 2 years academically with over a 5.0 GPA for both his sophomore and junior years.
Coach John Harrington in his 16th year at Briarcrest has a 70% winning record with 358 wins and 156 losses. “I am extremely proud of each and every player and how hard they have worked together as a team. I am especially proud of our seniors who have risen to the challenge when pushed by a talented group of younger players to lead this team to great accomplishments,” said Coach Harrington.
The Saints complete their final regular season game Friday night February 16 against Saint Benedict away, and host a sub-state game next Saturday February 24th against a team yet to be determined from Nashville. Let’s get behind our record setting Saints at both the SBA game and the Sub-State game as we strive for the State Tournament March 1-3.
