Briarcrest Middle School Student Wins National Scholastic Art Award
Sai Williams, 7thGrade Student at Briarcrest Christian School was recently awarded a National Silver Medal from Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Her sculpture, “First Century Bet’ab,” won a Gold Key at the Mid South Scholastic Art Competition hosted by Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. She then qualified for it to be submitted nationally. Receiving a national medal places Sai in the top 1% of all artwork submitted from across the nation! A photo of her work will be published on the Scholastic Online Gallery at www.artandwriting.orgbeginning in June. Her name will also be in the (Scholastic) 2019 Yearbook.
Sai’s sculpture was inspired by Coach Cole Bodkin’s 7thGrade Bible Class and Middle School Art Teacher, Melody Weintraub, entered the detailed piece in the regional competition.
“I was just so impressed that Sai created this independently,” says Mrs. Weintraub. “She made everything from the tiny vessels, ladders, and rugs to the structure itself. It’s just so skillfully executed. Her work has always amazed me and it’s just so wonderful for Sai and for Briarcrest that she is getting this level of recognition.”
