2020 Recipient

Since 1981, Joe has been a volunteer, Trustee, donor, and employee of Briarcrest. Primarily serving on the Trustee’s Athletic and Grounds committees, Joe also served as Vice Chairman of the Executive committee, where he chaired the effort to sell the Towering Oaks athletic facilities, which allowed the purchase of our current Houston Levee property.
Joe published the school’s sports programs in the 80’s and 90’s, and produced many end-of-year highlight films. He also led several capital campaigns and golf tournaments for the school.
Joe and his wife, Sandra, have contributed annually since joining Briarcrest. In 2001, Joe made a significant contribution to complete the interior of Wilson Field House. The following year, Joe was the lead donor in a capital campaign to bring all sports facilities to one campus, and was recognized with the naming of “Rowell Arena.”
In 2014, Joe was named Interim Athletic Director and four months later became the full-time Athletic Director.
A native of Atlanta, GA, Joe became a Christian at the age of 18 and married Sandra two years later, and recently celebrated their 48th anniversary. In 1981, Joe started Check Solutions, a successful banking software and consulting business that he sold in 2001.
Joe and Sandra’s children attended Briarcrest from early elementary through graduation. His daughter, Jennifer, Class of 93, and son-in-law Alan Pittman have two sons, AJ, Class of 20, and Landon, Class of 24. Joe’s son, Matt, Class of 95, and his wife, Tommie, have two daughters, Emma Hayes and Lucy, and reside in Brownsville, TN.
Joe and Sandra have been members of Bellevue Baptist Church since 1990 where Joe serves as a Deacon, sings in the choir, served on Finance Committee, and the strategic planning committee.
