04.18.10 | Briarcrest Choirs Win Contest, Go to State
Last week the Briarcrest High School Choirs under the direction of J.D. Frizzell, competed in two major festivals- West TN Vocal Music Educators Association District Festival here in Memphis and The Southern Star Regional Festival in Atlanta, GA. At the WTVMEA District Competition, The Briarcrest Singers, Men’s Choir, and Women’s Choir won Sweepstakes awards, the highest possible. The Concert Choir received a superior rating. This qualifies every single group for State Competition.
At the Southern Star Contest, the choirs did just as well. Men’s choir earned Silver medals, and Women’s, Briarcrest Singers, and OneVoice earned Gold medals. Our Women’s Choir won the sweepstakes award as the top concert choir at the festival. OneVoice, while competing in a separate jazz category, earned the highest score of all choirs.

The Briarcrest Commercial Music Ensembles, OneVoice, recently recorded their first compact disc at The Grove Recording Studio in Cordova. With styles ranging from rock to jazz, blues to a cappella pop, OneVoice’s debut album truly showcases the group’s talent and versatility.
The Grove, a part of Hope Presbyterian Church, partially sponsored the project as they do for many non-profit organizations in the Memphis area. The Grove is a state-of-the-art recording studio that is second to none in the region. Doing this in such a professional atmosphere is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these students.
The recording engineers were John Dollahite and Keith Pounds. The executive producer of the album is J.D. Frizzell, Director of Vocal Music at BCS. Michael Parsons, Director of Instrumental Music, is the Associate Producer. Both teachers were involved in the arrangement of the songs.
“Recording a CD at Hope is one of the most memorable experiences I have had so far as a teacher at Briarcrest,” saidJ.D. Frizzell, Director of Vocal Music at Briarcrest. “John and Keith, the engineers at The Grove Studio, were amazing. They helped bring the very best out of these extremely talented young men and women,” he added. “At times during the sessions, I would have to pause for a moment to grasp the significance of what they were doing. I would forget that they were high school students and that I was a high school teacher because the music was SO good.”
The CD will be available for sale at the Briarcrest Pops Concert on April 29 and 30 at the Briarcrest East Memphis campus. The concert starts at 7:00 PM each night. Admission is $15, free to Briarcrest students and staff. The Pops concert features a full big band, High School, Middle School, and Elementary School Choirs, OneVoice, and more.
In addition, the CD will be available for purchase through iTunes.
