From Beast to Beauty
Kudos to Ashley Williams and the cast and crew of Beauty and the Beast. Every aspect of excellence required to make this presentation among the best ever performed by Briarcrest was on full display. From the opening scene, I was mesmerized by the precision of the music, the quality of the acting, the exactness of the lighting and sound, the perfect timing of the stage crew, the and the beauty of the costumes. A masterpiece, indeed, and a production that won’t soon be repeated or forgotten.
But as the story of the prince confined to the prison of his own inner nature continued to unfold, I began to be touched by a deeper and more profound reality than the drama being presented before me. Because of “the Fall,” we were all like the prince - all cursed. Like the candlestick, the clock, Mrs. Potts, and Chip, we were condemned to die. We are all wasting away.
But there was a plan. There was always a plan to rescue mankind. Beauty entered our fallen world in the form of the “One Who Is Altogether Lovely.” His Name is Jesus. Through Him, death gave way to life. The curse was broken, and His mercies are new every morning. Daily He makes beauty from ashes.
Now that’s enough to make pots and pans dance and silverware sing.
Cheerleading/Pom News
Can you believe it? It’s time to begin our preparations for the cheer squads of 2010-2011! An informational meeting for parents will be held on Tuesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the High School Multi-Purpose Room. Mrs. Laura Nichols, Director of the BCMS Spirit Program, will lead parents through various topics regarding our cheerleading and pom programs. For more information, contact Mrs. Nichols at LCNichols@briarcrest.com.
Spring Sports Physicals
As we enter the season of spring sports, please remember that all athletes must have a current physical (dated after May 1, 2009) on file in the Middle School Office. Mrs. Becky Adkins, a nurse practitioner, will be on campus on Friday, March 5 to administer physicals. Of course, you may always use your private physician, but many find the convenience and low price ($20) of the on-campus service quite inviting. Please send your form (available online) and your payment (checks made payable to Becky Adkins) to Miss Montye so that she can schedule an appointment for your young athlete.
Box Top Collection Time
Parents: The next collection day for box tops and labels will be Thursday, March 4. As usual, just put these in a baggie and send with your child. Thanks for your continued willingness to help in this regard.

The Graves Truth
“Beauty and the Beast”
If you did not get the opportunity to see “Beauty and the Beast,” our High School Drama Department’s spring performance, you really missed a treat! Our family went together this past Saturday night. We were truly anticipating it being a fun-filled evening, but the show went beyond our wildest expectations. We laughed, we clapped, and we hummed along with them and had a great time. As we left, I could not help but be in awe of the talents of so many of our students. Many of those on stage have spent numerous hours in my home. To watch them sing, dance, and perform publicly was an incredible honor. My soul was blessed.
I cannot help be touched when I see students using their God-given talents to the best of their abilities. We honor God when we use our resources to further His Kingdom. There will be people who look at our school more closely because of the excellence that they saw portrayed on the stage during those performances. Because someone may choose to come to our school, they may very well come to know Christ while they are here. To see Alexis Tarver perform as Belle was awesome. To see Paul Powers on the stage as The Beast and, not even recognize his voice, was incredible. Christian Lopes can not only play baseball, but that young man has a comic streak in him! There were many others on the stage and behind the scenes, but those are just the ones that immediately come to my mind.
I share these thoughts with you because I want to encourage each of us as parents to help our children find their God-given talents and abilities and USE them. To have a gift and not use it cannot be honoring to our Lord. Middle School is a great opportunity to try a lot of different things and narrow the focus as students get older. Help students to not only discover what the talent/gift may be, but what their passion may be! Let them try different sports, drama, cheer, band, and/or choir. It is the process of life that helps them to become who they are called to be. I have met very few people who have “always known” what their calling was. Many have discovered their loves and passions I middle school and later. Help your sweet children cultivate their talents and use them to His glory and honor!
Life is truly beautiful when we are where we are supposed to be, doing what we are called to do. Life is a beast when we aren’t!
