Briarcrest
Christian High School is pleased to announce that Hilary Reese, junior, was selected by audition
to participate in the 2008 Tennessee Governor’s School for Vocal Music.
The Tennessee Governor's
School for the Arts is a five-week summer program for rising eleventh and
twelfth grade students in Tennessee. Administered by the State Department of
Education, the program offers intensive study programs in art, dance, theatre,
and music. Students are selected in competitive auditions usually during the
months of January or February. Auditions are open to Tennessee residents who
attend public or private schools.
The School for the Arts
at MTSU focuses on music, dance, visual arts, and theatre. In music, students
rehearse daily in major ensembles such as orchestra, band or chorus. Chamber
ensembles and private instruction are available for string, brass, woodwind,
percussion, piano, and voice. Ballet students concentrate on classes in
classical ballet with some experience in modern dance. Visual Art students
experience professional studio practices in activities which include computer
art, painting, ceramics, drawing, jewelry, graphic design, computer graphics,
printmaking, and sculpture. Theatre students explore all facets of the
theatrical arts, including both performance and technical theatre. They
participate in small group activities in acting, mime, voice improvement, oral
interpretation, stage movement and stage combat, as well as in design and
production activities in costuming, lighting, sound, and set construction.
The summer curriculum
includes individual and group instruction designed to help each student explore
and develop his or her talents in music, ballet, theatre, and art. About four
hours a day, six days a week are spent working in the major area of
concentration. Each student is assigned to a major art area to pursue
intermediate and advanced study in either art, ballet, theatre, or music.
Private and group instruction taught by professionals well known in their
fields is a part of this segment. Students are involved to the extent of their
artistic capacity, but music, art, theatre, and ballet are not all they study.
Each student is also exposed to other art fields through interdisciplinary
studies, guest lecturers, exhibits, and films.

Seven Briarcrest Christian High School students participated in the All-State Honor Choir Concert, held at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in downtown Nashville on April 18-21, 2007. The students participated in three days of intense rehearsals in either the Men's, Ladies' or SATB Choir, enjoyed a concert by the Nashville Symphony, and attended several other concerts including the All-State Jazz Band and the Lee University Choral Singers.
Briarcrest was represented in the Men's Choir by Jonathan Edmiston (Tenor I), Johnny Paul Cole (Tenor I), Dave Hogue (Tenor II), and Doug Morley (Bass II). Sarah Wofford (Soprano I) and Loren Bruce (Alto II)participated in the Ladies Choir, and Ryan Rhue (Bass II) was a member of the SATB Choir. These students were the only singers from private schools in the greater Memphis area who were chosen to participate in all of these choirs, and Briarcrest had the second highest number of students participating among ALL schools in the Memphis area.
Dr.William P. Rayburn, the Director of Fine Arts and Choral Director for Briarcrest Christian High School, is completing his second year as president-elect of the West Tennessee Vocal Music Educators Association. In addition, he is a member of the Tennessee Music Education Association Executive Committee. Dr. Rayburn has also been twice selected as an Outstanding Teacher by the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts. He is completing his sixth year as Choral Director at BCS. Additionally, Dr. Rayburn serves as the Director of Traditional Music at Advent Presbyterian Church in Cordova.
BCHS Choirs Tour England

During Spring Break, members of the Briarcrest Singers and Briarcrest Concert Choir toured England, visiting London, Bath, and Cambridge. The 43-member choir performed at Canterbury Cathedral, the American School at Egham, Bath Abbey, Ely Cathedral, and Great St. Mary’s Church in Cambridge.
In addition to the performances, the choir also toured many historical sites throughout England including The Tower of London, Canterbury Cathedral, Windsor Castle, the Roman ruins at Bath, Warwick Castle, and Cambridge University. While in London, members of the choir also attended several London musical productions. Other members of the choir ventured into the streets of London on a Jack the Ripper Walking Tour, while others enjoyed incredible views of London while riding the London Eye (a large Ferris wheel built for the Y2K celebration).
The choir first performed on Monday at Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury. In fact, the choir’s performance was just steps away from the altar at which Thomas Becket was martyred, a featured setting of one part of the BCHS senior-year English curriculum. The choir’s performance was well-received, and the presiding rector asked for an encore.
On Tuesday the choir performed twice at the Egham American School. And choir members were able to interact with students from all over the world. Following the concert, the choir toured Windsor Castle, including portions of the Queen’s residence and viewed works by Leonardo Di Vinci.
On Wednesday the choir performed an hour-long concert of sacred literature ranging from the English Renaissance to contemporary composers at Bath Abbey. The performance venue is noted for its incredibly worshipful and acoustical environment. Again the choir was well-received and the concert was well-attended by tourists.
Thursday the choir traveled to Cambridge with a stop at Warwick Castle. The Castle is the oldest castle in England, with portions having been built by William the Conqueror. This venue provided an opportunity for the students to explore medieval life with live-action displays including the World’s Largest Trebuchet, a BCHS curricular interest for physics students. In fact, the students were fortunate to view the trebuchet in action. The trebuchet launched a 35-pound concrete ball over 300 yards.
In Cambridge, the choir participated in a sung Eucharist at the King’s College Chapel. The service was extremely moving with many students and chaperons participating in the Holy Eucharist. Also, listening to the incredible music performed by the world famous King’s College Boy’s Choir was breathtaking. An unexpected moment happened during the service when the King’s College Chaplain prayed specifically for Briarcrest Christian School of Memphis.
Friday was possibly the most incredible day for our students. The choir first toured the large and beautiful cathedral in the small town of Ely. In fact, many consider the chapel the finest acoustical environment for singing in the United Kingdom. The choir performed a concert to a packed chapel of tourists, chaperons, and local residents. The choir’s performance was incredible while being enhanced by the chapel’s six-second reverb. The choir was well-received, and Dr. Rayburn received several e-mails from attendees at the concert.
Following the Ely Cathedral performance, the choir quickly returned to Cambridge’s Great St. Mary’s Church to participate in a personal two-and one-half hour workshop with English composer and conductor John Rutter. The choir performed three of Mr. Rutter’s compositions as well as works by Thomas Tallis, Morten Lauridsen, Elizabeth Poston, and William Dawson. After the workshop, Mr. Rutter was kind enough to autograph his compositions for each student and most of the adults. The workshop with John Rutter incredibly capped a superb week of singing and sightseeing. Soli Deo Gloria!
