In his freshman year at Vanderbilt, Nathan Johnson (06) won the Henrietta Morgan
Memorial Award for first-year writers. The award and a monetary prize
are presented yearly at commencement to the outstanding first-year writer. Nathan’s
paper was entitled “Death as a Teacher: The Common thread in Emily
Dickinson’s ‘I heard a Fly buzz—when I died’ and Langston
Hughes’ ‘End.’”
Deryl Davis ('81) directs the Sunday Forum
dialogues at Washington National Cathedral and is Faculty Associate in Drama
and Religion at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington. His book From
Darkness to Light: A Spiritual Journey Through Dante's "Divine Comedy"
will be published in 2008.
The National Scholastic Press Association awarded Third Place honors in the 2007 Best Magazine Spread contest to BCHS students Scott Lyle and Sarah Crase. The spread appeared in the 2007 Desiderata, the school's literary/arts magazine. Mrs. Linda Rush of the English Department staff is the magazine adviser.
International Quill & Scroll awarded a First Place/Superior rating to the 2006-2007 issues of Pawprints, the system-wide newspaper produced by the high school journalism class. Mrs. Rush was the faculty adviser for these issues.
Roma Henderson
Department Chair
Mrs. Henderson joined the BCS staff in 1975. She holds a BA Degree (Baylor University) and an M. Ed. Degree (University of Memphis).
Mrs. Henderson teaches standard-level senior English and honors-level senior English.
Sarah H. Conger
Mrs. Conger joined the BCS staff this year. She holds a BA Degree (Trevecca University).
Mrs. Conger teaches standard-level English 9 and honors-level English 9.
Sandra Longworth
Mrs. Longworth joined the BCS staff in 1997 and returned to a high school assignment this year. She holds both a BA Degree and an M. Ed. Degree from Union University.
Mrs. Longworth teaches standard-level junior English, honors-level junior English, and Journalism. She also serves as the faculty adviser to The Saint, the high school yearbook.
Jodi Millican
Mrs. Millican joined the BCS staff this year. She holds both a BA Degree and a MAT Degree (University of Memphis).
Mrs. Millican teaches standard-level English 10 and standard-level English 12.
Mark Nabors
Mr. Nabors joined the BCS staff in 2006. He holds a BA Degree (University of Tennessee-Knoxville) and is completing an MA Degree (University of Memphis).
Mr. Nabors teaches honors-level English 10 and standard-level English 11.
Linda Rush
Mrs. Rush joined the BCS staff in 1986. She holds a BA Degree (University of Memphis).
Mrs. Rush teaches Creative Writing, Journalism, and French. She is the sponsor of both Desiderata, the literary magazine, and Pawprints, the high school newspaper.
Pat Williams
Dr. Williams joined the BCS staff in 1974. He holds the BAE Degree, M Ed. Degree, and Ed. D Degree (The University of Mississippi).
Dr. Williams teaches Advanced Placement ® English 11 and Advanced Placement ® English 12. He is co-editor of The Leader, the school system biannual magazine.
