Summer
Opportunities: There are many opportunities on college campuses for rising sophomores,
juniors and seniors. Interested students should come to the Guidance Office
to peruse the Summer Opportunity File. Some of the application deadlines are
soon. The costs vary, and some programs are free, or cost very little, while
others cost around $2,000.
Scholarships!!!
Seniors who want scholarships to help pay college expenses should be applying
for them at this time. This past October in a Scholarship Meeting, I gave a
handout to all seniors who came to meeting. It listed websites and numerous
specific scholarships for seniors interested in applying for them. Additional
handout copies are available in my office for anyone who may have lost their
copy or didn't come to the meeting. Two free excellent scholarship websites
are www.fastweb.com and www.scholarshipexperts.com.
Juniors
should plan to take the ACT test in April or June for the first time, if they
haven't already taken it at least once. ALL juniors should take the ACT two
or three times during the 11th grade year and possibly take the SAT at least
once. Students may register online at www.actstudent.org.
Be sure to enter the Briarcrest school code number (431391) in the registration
process. The test is offered at Briarcrest, and our test center code is listed
under Eads instead of Memphis.
The
University of Memphis has changed the undergraduate admission policy. For students
who are applying for fall 2008, the admission formula of 30 X GPA + ACT must
= 95. No student will be admitted if the gpa is below 2.24 OR if the ACT is
below 16, regardless if the admission formula is met. Again, due to excellent
applicants, Memphis no longer has to admit students who don't meet this criteria.
Transcript
Requests: For current students who request a transcript to be sent to a college
or university, there will no longer be a charge. (There is a $3.00 fee for all
past graduates.) However, ALL students must complete a request form in the Guidance
Office for one to be sent. Transcripts are only "official" when they are mailed
directly from the high school to the college admissions office.
