Latin, French, and Spanish . . .

Two consecutive years of study in the same language are required for graduation. Beginning with the Class of 2012, a student must complete three years of the same foreign language as the requirement for the Honors Endorsement.


Latin

1304
Latin I – 1 credit

This course presents students with the basics of grammar and vocabulary needed for their acquisition of sequential translation skills from Latin to English. The Latin I curriculum also includes a variety of topics in Roman culture, civilization, and English vocabulary derived from Latin.

Latin II – 1 credit
Prerequisite: 1304 Latin I

This course continues the same topics from Latin I, incorporating a review of Level I material with the acquisition of new grammar and vocabulary. Latin II places intensive emphasis on translation skills to prepare students who desire to continue their study of Latin beyond two years. The auxiliary topics in culture and civilization also continue in greater scope.

Honors Latin III– 1 credit
Prerequisite: 2304 Latin II.

In this course the student will continue to strengthen grammar and vocabulary skills. Also, the student will translate portions of the works of Roman authors such as Caesar, Cicero, Pliny, Livy, etc., and will read and translate selections from the AP Latin Literature syllabus (Catullus and Ovid) in preparation for AP Latin.

AP LatinIV – 1 credit
Prerequisites: 2304 Latin II and instructor approval of AP application.

In this course, students pursue the national requirements or the AP Vergil or the AP Latin Literature examination. The emphasis is translation of original works of Latin into English, with additional study of the historical context of these works and the characteristics of Latin poetry.



French

1314
French I – 1 credit
French I introduces students to the francophone culture and builds a foundation in French vocabulary, grammar, and the oral sound system. Commercially-prepared DVD’s, CD’s and videos enhance the auditory learning experience. Additionally, students participate in short conversations.

French II – 1 credit
Prerequisite: 1314 French I
French II builds on the foundation established in French I. Students continue to develop all language skills by furthering their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary while improving their speaking, listening, and reading skills through a variety of media.

Honors French III – 1 credit
Prerequisite: 2314 French II and recommendation of instructor.
This course reviews grammar learned in French I and II and introduces new grammar. Most grammar is taught in context of reading original French works, as well as personal student writing. Students are introduced to language which French young people would use through the French In Action video/book series. Readings in French literature include Le Petit Prince.

Honors French IV – 1 credit
Prerequisite: 3316 Honors French III and recommendation of instructor.
This course reviews grammar learned in previous French courses and introduces new grammar and vocabulary through the context of reading French works. A study of French history begins with prehistoric caves in Lascaux, France, and ends with the present day. History and literature from every major period are presented. Students engage in research outside of class and read Cyrano de Bergerac.

* These courses meet together alternating materials every other year. In even-numbered years, Tresor du Temps is used, and in odd-numbered years, French in Action is used.



Spanish

Spanish I – 1 credit (Limited enrollment by assignment only.)
This course introduces students to Hispanic culture, builds a foundation in vocabulary and grammar, and emphasizes oral communication.

Spanish I – 1 credit
Spanish I introduces students to Hispanic culture, builds a foundation in vocabulary and grammar, and emphasizes oral communication. Students listen to tapes, view videos and DVD’s, participate in short Spanish conversations, and practice vocabulary and grammatical skills.

2322
Spanish II – 1 credit (Limited enrollment by assignment only.)
Prerequisite: 1322 Spanish I
This course builds on the foundation gained in 1322 Spanish I, continuing to develop language skills. There is more emphasis on grammatical structure, speaking Spanish, and reading for comprehension.

2324
Spanish II – 1 credit
Prerequisite: 1324 Spanish I
This course builds on the foundation gained in Spanish I, continuing to develop the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There is more emphasis on grammatical structure, speaking Spanish, and reading for comprehension.

3326
Honors Spanish III – 1 credit
Prerequisite: 2324 Spanish II and a recommendation from instructor.
This course emphasizes advanced grammar; listening, reading, and writing are also stressed. Spanish literature, history, and art are studied in depth. The students read short stories and selections from a classical work, listen to taped readings, write short essays, make oral presentations, and learn idiomatic expressions.

4326
Honors Spanish IV – 1 credit
Prerequisite: 3326 Spanish III and recommendation from instructor.
This course offers an intensive review of advanced grammar and focuses on speaking and writing the Spanish language. The students read historical selections, short stories, poetry, a play, fairy tales, and selections from a classical work. They also make oral presentations and participate in listening activities.
