Briarcrest Drama Takes Center Stage!

Welcome to the BCS drama page.

The Briarcrest Christian School drama program is designed to allow students who are interested in acting and staging to participate in plays and musicals.  The high school curriculum includes an Introduction to Theatre Arts class, an Acting Class, Dance clas and a Production Workshop class.

The dramatic production during the fall semester is a classical or modern selection.  Some past fall plays include A Midsummer Night's Dream, Father of the Bride, The Taming of the Shrew, The Crucible, Neil Simon's female version of The Odd Couple, The Nerd and The Fantasticks.  The high school play in the spring semester is a musical that involves all areas of the fine arts department: drama, visual arts, choir, and the band.  Some past musicals include Peter Pan, Annie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Carousel, She Loves Me and Oklahoma!. The 2007-2008 season includes Neil Simon's Rumors and Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods

The annual middle school musical is presented in the spring semester.  Productions have included Schoolhouse Rock, Jr., The Music Man, Jr., Aladdin Jr. and The Wizard of Oz.  The 2008 BCMS production will be Seussical the Musical.

The drama department encourages its participants to realize the message of James 1:17a:

"All good and perfect gifts are from above . . . ."

Into to the Woods

“Life is no fairytale.” Or is it? There is one fairy tale that correctly depicts the struggles of life in the real world. Into the Woods may have the storybook characters you know and love but it reveals unexpected pasts and some not so happy endings. This classic take off the Grimm Brothers fairy tales teaches individuals that sometimes the things you most wish for are far from the things you need.

Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods intertwines the stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood. James Lapine, the playwright, ads the story of a childless Baker and his wife, as they journey “into the woods” to reverse the childless spell. They make new acquaintances and come to realize that life is a struggle worth fighting for. This show’s hilarious antics and vibrant costumes will keep the children captivated and the adults laughing.

The Into the Woods cast at Briarcrest Christian High School, directed by Ashleigh Williams and Allie Gay and under the musical direction of Dr. Billy Rayburn and Mark Lewis, is ecstatic to present this differentiated musical. Miss Gay says, “The students are working so hard, this is going to be one of Briarcrest’s most challenging, and yet, one of its most successful shows.” The cast includes William Bateman, Bryce Berry, Andrew Blackard, Lyn Blackwell, Sarah Biggs, Brooke Bonner, Alexis Cole, Heather Davidson, Chandler Duffel, Cameron Faulk, Savannah Gibbons, Jenna Gladney, Taylor Anne Goode, Stewart Guenther, Sally Beth Ince, Michael Joiner, Bradley Karel, Christian Lopes, Rebekah McFerran, Anna Melvin, Doug Morely, Brandin Myrick, Lauren Norton, Kara Provence, Ashley Reed, Hilary Reese, Ben Rote, Chase Ring, Will Smith, Lindsay Sutherland, Alexis Tarver, and Sarah Wofford.

Into the Woods will be showing at Briarcrest’s East Memphis Campus, 6000 Briarcrest Ave. The show will take the stage February 14th-16th and will continue on February 21st - 23rd. Tickets can be purchased at the door (students- $10, adults $12). For more information call (901) 751- 6400.
