Seniors Earn $7.3 Million in Scholarships

The Class of 2008 will graduate on Saturday, May 17 at 10 a.m. at Germantown Baptist Church. This class has distinguished themselves by earning over $7.3 million in scholarships and awards. In addition to this impressive figure, the class boasts 2 National Merit Scholars (Nico Barawid and Alicia White) and 6 National Merit Commended Scholars.

Twenty-three members (15%) of the Class of 2008 scored 30 or higher on the ACT, with 30 members (20%) scoring 29 or higher. The members of the Class of 2008 have also been accepted to an impressive list of colleges and universities. See related web story.

Senior Chosen "Best" Academic All-Star

The Academic All-Stars program ran for 30 weeks during the school year. By April 6, 191 Academic All-Stars had been named and more than $52,000 in scholarships had been earmarked for these students. Each of this year's First Tennessee Academic All-Stars received a $250 scholarship savings acccount. Ten students, including BCS Senior Nico Barawid, were named the "best" of the individual category winners and received an additional $500 in their scholarship accounts.

Top Scholars Honored at Woodland Hills Banquet

The Annual Top Scholars Banquet was held last night at Woodland Hills Country Club. Twenty-two seniors were honored at a banquet including parents, administrators, and selected faculty. Criteria for selection is as follows:

Seniors who have attained the following averages after 7 semesters are awarded these honors:

  • Summa Cum Laude 4.50+
  • Magna Cum Laude 4.25-4.49

Magna cum laude designees receive a pen and pencil set. Summa cum laude designees receive a pen and pencil set and a $200 check for college expenses. Additionally the Salutatorian receives a $250 US Savings Bond and the Valedictorian receives a $500 US Savings Bond.

The 2008 Top Scholars are: Nico Barawid-Valedictorian, Alicia White-Salutatorian; Summa Cum Laude (alphabetical listing): Matt Amick, Anna Clark, Gray McClatchy, Jake McCrary, Salar Rafieetary, Andrew Reed, Wes Robertson, Hunter Thornton, and Robbie Zettler. Magna Cum Laude (alphabetical listing): Lizzie Adams, Lee Anderson, Meredith Blaylock, Loren Bruce, Lauren Cook, Tyler Ellis, Grant Gaines, Bonnie Lynch, Chris McDaniel, Derek Russell, Annie Shackelford, and Nathaniel Thompson.

Sophomore Chosen for US Air Force Academy Summer Program

Sophomore Kevin Moss has been selected to attend the 2008 SAME/USAFA Engineering and Construction Camp, June 27th – July 3rd at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. The camp is located at the United States Air Force Academy’s (USAFA) Field Engineering and Readiness Laboratory (FERL). His application went through a local and national review process prior to selection to the program.

Kevin will participate in activities to include visiting NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command), located under ground in Cheyenne Mountain (where all the underground nuclear missiles are located), building concrete barriers using math and science skills, building a catapult, and a construction competition.


Middle School Choir and Band Receive Top Scores at Festival

Congratulations to the Middle School Band and Choir for their outstanding performances in the Atlanta Music in the Parks Festival held May 2-3. The band received an "excellent" rating, while the choir took Second Place and received an "excellent" rating as well. The choir festival was held at Douglas County High School. There were 14 MS choirs participating. The band festival was held at Chapel Hill High School. There were 16 MS bands participating. See full story and photos.


Sixth Graders Attend National Junior Leadership Conference

Sixth Graders Hunter Wilson and Grady Vaughn were selected by their teachers to attend the Junior National Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. in March. These two young men were able to see national monuments, explore historic Philadelphia, experience the story of John Brown at Harper’s Ferry, participate in historical reenactments and delve into key leadership concepts! Hunter and Grady represented BCMS in an outstanding fashion and learned many leadership skills that will serve them well as they progress through middle and high school. Lady Saints Play Tonight for Region Championship

The Lady Saints beat St. Agnes last night 15-5 in the region tournament. They advance in the winner's bracket to play St. Benedict tonight at St. Benedict at 7:00 p.m.


Varsity Baseball in Region Play Tonight

The Saints lost to CBHS 7-3 on Tuesday and will play MUS today at 4:30 at CBHS. The Saints need a win today to be guaranteed a spot in next week's sectional games. Come out to CBHS this afternoon and support the Saints!


Saints Baseball Featured in BCS Graduate's Gallery

Craig Thompson, BCS 1979 graduate and current BCS parent, will have an opening of his photography exhibit, "Diamonds in the Rough" on May 11 from 6-9 p.m. at Disciple Gallery, located at 390 South Main Street. See photography and more about the exhibit, which is open to BCS families.


Sports Physicals Offered May 15, 2008

Physicals will be offered at Campbell Clinic on Thursday, May 15, 2008 beginning at 5:30 p.m. for students entering 9th-12th grade. Students should bring completed forms (available in athletic office/mailed to your home) with them to Campbell Clinic. You must bring the completed forms signed by your parent with you or you will be turned away. This physical will be valid for the 2008-09 school year. In order for a student to participate in an athletic event the 2008-09 school year, a physical MUST be on file in the athletic office. The cost of the physical will be $20 and will need to be paid to the school in advance. Please bring check (only) to athletic office by Thursday, May 15, 2008. Textbook Repurchasing Schedule and Fall Textbook Sales

Senior Exam Week:
• Only at the High School Saint Shop
• May 13, 14, and 15: 7:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

High School Exam Week:
• May 19, 20, and 21: 7:15 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
• May 22: 7:15 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Middle School Exam Week:
• May 19, 20, and 21: 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

The Saint Shop will be closed after May 22 and will reopen on August 4. The Textbook Bulletin, which contains the books required for next year's classes, will be posted on the website mid-summer. Watch for it in BCS Headlines.

This year, Briarcrest will be offering a Textbook Reservation Service. Information will be sent to parents in early Summer, including a Reservation form. Used and new textbooks can be reserved by returning the Textbook Reservation Form to the Saint Shop. Parents will be able to pick up and pay for books during Textbook Sales the first week of August. This new service should expedite the book buying process by allowing parents/students to reserve books before arriving at the Saint Shop to purchase books. Books will be pulled for the student and ready to purchase at that time.

There will be a location change for Textbook Sales. Middle and High School textbooks will be sold in the High School Commons at 10103 E. Raleigh LaGrange on these dates:
  • Monday, August 4: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, August 5: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 6: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 7: 2:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. (EVENING ONLY)
  • Friday, August 8: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

• Middle School Textbooks ONLY will be sold at 6000 Briarcrest Avenue on Monday, August 11: Middle School Transition Day
• High School Textbooks WILL NOT be sold on Monday, August 11
• The High School Saint Shop will re-open on Tuesday, August 12 at 7 a.m.
Beginning Tuesday, August 12:
• High School books will be sold only at the High School Saint Shop.
• Middle School books will be sold only at the Middle School Saint Shop.


Save the Date! Faith in Motion Banquet-August 16

The second phase of the capital campaign will begin with the Faith in Motion banquet on Saturday evening, August 16, 2008 at 6 p.m. at BCHS. Exciting information will be shared pertaining to the new building campaign! Mark your calendars now to enjoy an evening of food, faith and friendship. Important detailed information will be communicated via email this summer!
